Bridging the Silence - Laos PDR

Bridging the Silence - Laos PDR

Although Laos PDR is on the rapid economic growth, the poverty is still problematic underlying the public health status in the whole country.
Despite data limitations, it is clear that infectious diseases still account for a significant proportion of disability-adjusted life years lost (DALYs).
Different from more developed countries, chronic otitis media or infection in the middle ear is still common in their population, which has led to hearing loss and further serious infection in the brain.

In the year 2010 only one active ear surgeon was available for the entire country.

In that year the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University started full training the first ENT resident from Laos PDR, who graduated in 2013. The funding for training was supported from TICA, and since that day two more physicians were trained to be part of the ENT team at Mahosot Hospital, the only university hospital in Vientiane.
Furthermore, the KKU helped them to open the ENT training in Laos PDR for the first time in 2018.

However, the number of staffs is still insufficient at this moment, so a 4th resident from Laos PDR was sent for training at Khon Kaen University.
The KKU provided the training without tuition fee as they shared facilities for the training with the current program for Thais.
The trainee will finish her residency program in May 2020.

However, the budget to support the living expenses, accommodation, travel, and some educational materials for the remaining time from October 2019 - May 2020 is beyond the available grant.
After her training, Doctor Visana (second from the right on the picture above) will work at Mahosot Hospital as a teaching staff and ENT specialist for their training program and ENT service. Her role in the department will be important as a young staff to actively contribute to the education program and the clinical service.

We as Rotary Club Nakhon Khon Kaen have decided to support the Doctor trainee for the remaining 8 months till graduation, from October 2019 till May 2020, with a budget of 10,000 Baht / Month, or a total of 80,000 Baht (2,700 US$ or 2,450 €) till the end of her internship.

Any amount, big or small is very much appreciated as it will get us closer to our target. If you would consider to support our project please contact us via email:
